Abstract
To the Editor: We read with interest the report by Carney and Goldberg on a possible role for adipose-tissue lipoprotein lipase in the mediation of weight gain after cessation of cigarette smoking.1 We have also been interested in this phenomenon2 and have also observed a relation between the activity of the adipose-tissue enzyme and changes in body weight in smoking adults. After the measurement of lipoprotein lipase activity3 in gluteal adipose tissue in overweight fasting adults, 8 smokers (mean [±S.E.M.] weight, 96±5.0 kg) and 22 nonsmokers (90±4.9 kg) were placed on hypocaloric diets. Smokers were defined as subjects who smoked . . .Keywords
