Severe anaphylactic reaction after a soap enema.

Abstract

Soap is the most common substance used in clearing enemata. Local reactions vary from simple irritation to necrosis. Sometimes bowel perforation occurs when local infection was previously present. Enemata may be contraindicated where there is a past history of allergic phenomena or sensitivity reactions especially to soap derivatives. The symptoms are described in a case history.
