Abstract
The larvae of the toad Alytes obstetricans, the spleen of which has at least 6000 lymphoid cells, are able to mount an immune response against sheep or human red blood cells. The study of the ontogeny of the spleen shows that even if it contains as little as 500–1000 cells, there is always at least one cell able to react with the antigen.
