Abstract
The larval development of S. cinereum has been followed in the laboratory from hatching to the 1st crab stage. Twelve hundred zoeae were maintained on Artemia nauplii and fertilized Arbacia eggs under constant conditions of temperature, salinity, and light. Four zoeal stages and 1 megalops stage were found in the complete development to the 1st crab. The larvae and appendages are described and figured. Setation of the maxillula and maxilla increases progressively with larval development. The absence of an unsegmented flagellum on the antehnule of the megalops may serve as a diagnostic character for the differentiation of S. cinereum megalops in plantonic material.
