Abstract
A method has been devised for measuring the available energy of foodstuffs in terms of one-week gains in the weight of young rats fed calorically restricted diets under carefully controlled conditions. When tested with lard, tallow, hardened tallow, glucose, sucrose, casein, and celluflour the theoretical values for available energy were obtained. The method permits approximation of the energy contributions of foodstuffs without resort to complex and laborious balance studies. Keywords
