Abstract
A new method of determining virilizing properties in steroids was described. Sagittal serial sections were made of the fetuses whose mothers had been treated during pregnancy. The following criteria were recorded for the purpose of classifying the stage of virilization:length of septum urovaginale; anogenital distance measured in histologic preparations; epitheliomae in the caudal district of the vagina; course, length and shape of the urethra, and, secondarily, behavior of the corpora cavernosa and changes in shape of the clitoris. Based on the measured and estimated sizes, as well as on the topographic arrangement of the genital organs, 5 different stages of virilization were distinguished.
