The influence of surface structure on a tarnishing reaction

Abstract
The tarnishing of thermally etched surfaces of silver by hydrogen sulphide at room temperature has been studied by electron microscopy. Silver sulphide grows preferentially on some facets, steps and edges. The observations are consistent with the assumption that the controlling step in the tarnishing process is the removal of silver atoms from their environment in the surface.
