The importance of radiographic monitoring of endoscopic sphincterotomy.

Abstract
The radiographic features of endoscopic sphincterotomies [for the removal of stones and the treatment of papillary stenosis] performed in 44 patients were evaluated. Radiographic landmarks aided in proper sphincterotome placement and also disclosed conditions and anatomic variations that made catheter placement difficult. Fluoroscopic and radiographic monitoring not only assisted the performance of endoscopic sphincterotomy, but also confirmed successful results and revealed reasons for failure. Radiographic changes in the biliary tract after sphincterotomy, as well as potential complications of sphincterotomy, are discussed and illustrated.
