THE BIOSYNTHESIS OF RICINOLEIC ACID

Abstract
Ricinoleic acid was synthesized in the immature castor bean (Ricinus zanzibariensis and R. gibsonii) seed only after 3-4 weeks from the time of fertilization. Synthesis occurred both in the isolated embryo and the endosperm. Linoleic acid did not act as precursor of ricinoleic acid in the isolated bean embryo. Oleic acid was the direct precursor of ricinoleic acid. The reaction did not use molecular oxygen. This suggests that ricinoleic acid is not a precursor of linoleic acid.
