Abstract
Gomphonema geminatum (Lyngb.) C. Ag. was illustrated as a new taxon, Didymosphaenia geminata, by M. Schmidt in 1899. He regarded it as a subgenus of Gomphonema, having an arcuate raphe, the valve slightly bent as in Cymbella and a pair of apical spines. The transmission and scanning electron microscopes have confirmed the validity of this taxon and have revealed further complexity, with greater ornateness than G. parvulum Kütz. and other species of Gomphonema.
