Abstract
A photoionization mass spectrometer has been employed to study charge transfer involving 2P3/2 argon ions at ion‐source pressures 15 to 60 μ and with a source acceleration potential of 0.5 eV. The average energy of the reacting ions are calculated and are found to be less than 0.17 eV. The following rate constants were obtained: A++NO→A+NO+, k=3.9×10−10 cc/molecule·sec; A++O2→A+O2+, k=1.1×10−10 cc/molecule·sec; A++CO2→A+CO2+, k=7.0×10−10 cc/molecule·sec; A++CO→A+CO+, k=1.25×10−10 cc/molecule·sec; A++N2→A+N2+, k=0.66×10−10 cc/molecule·sec. The theoretical implications are discussed.
