Abstract
We present an analysis of the factors that affect selectivity in resonant multiphoton ionization. After a discussion of the formalism in terms of the density matrix in the context of two-photon-resonant three-photon ionization, we apply the theory to Li and Sr, demonstrating the effects of laser bandwidth, power broadening, and pulse duration. Keywords
