Influence of Protein Diets on Development of Renoprival Hypertension in Dogs

Abstract
Renoprival hypertension in dogs is augmented by gross overhydration with electrolyte solution, but neither its occurrence nor its severity is altered by daily peritoneal dialysis. A high protein diet in 10 dogs compared with fasting in 5 dogs caused only a slight increase in severity of renoprival hypertension, far less than overhydration. High protein-containing diets increased the number and severity of medial arteriolar necroses and of focal myocardial necroses when compared with similar lesions in unfed, nephrectomized dogs.
