Rapid Synchronizing

Abstract
Changing system needs in the last decade have placed a higher premium on the rapid startup capability of hydropower for both stream storage and pumped storage types. Its utilization for daily load peaking naturally results from the increasing preponderance of thermal power sources, which inherently have rather sluggish response. Additionally, the rapid startup potential of hydro units makes them well suited to emergency standby service. Rapid startup capability in many cases can avoid the losses of spinning reserve.
