Thrips Control on Peanuts with Granulated Insecticides1

Abstract

Certain granulated insecticides applied to the soil''s surface shortly after peanut emergence effectively control the tobacco thrips, Frankliniella fusca. Granulated aldrin at 2.3 to 3 lb./ acre was among the most effective control measures tested, giving a degree of control similar to that obtained with DDT dust at 1 lb./ acre, toxaphene spray at 1.5 lb./acre and DDT spray at 0.75 lb./acre. Among those materials giving promising results against thrips were granulated dieldrin at 1.2 to 1.5 lb./ acre and granulated parathion at 1 lb./acre. Granulated heptachlor at 1.4 to 1.5 lb./acre was less effective and granulated toxaphene at 20 lb./acre was relatively ineffective against thrips.
