ORGAN WEIGHTS OF ANIMALS MAINTAINED ON ALLEGED APHRODISIACS: “PEGA PALO” AND “BOIS COCHON”1

Abstract
There is no evidence that either bois cochon bark or pega palo vine (alleged aphrodisiacs) exerts an effect on the testes, prostate, or seminal vesicles of hypophysectomized or intact rats. The absence of an increase in the weight of the testes in normal or hypophysectomized animals argues against a gonadotropic effect, and the failure to depress testicular size in intact rats or to restore the weights of the accessory genital structures after hypophysectomy excludes any possible androgenic action.
