I. RELATIONSHIP OF CHEMICAL COMPOSITION TO BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY

Abstract
A review of 20 references concerned with relationship between chemical structure and biological properties of endotoxins principally prepared from Salmonella enteritides. At present there are 4 main positive findings with reference to the chemical nature of endotoxins: (1) they are large polysaccharide complexes, (2) an acid inactivated lipid, (3) a complex of a critically large size molecule, and/or (4) some small component which is active only when attached to an appropriate macromolecular carrier.
