Abstract
The 24 group A Coxsackie viruses, representing the prototypic serotypes established by Dallforf and Sickles were passaged in primary cultures of human amnionic cells. Excepting 8 serotypes (types 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 19 and 22) all others were cytopathic (CPE) on amnionic cells. Type 7 produced CPE on HeLa or renal cell (monkey) cultures. Among the group A viruses producing CPE were 5 (types 3, 8, 12, 17 and 24) which heretofore have not been described as being propagable on cells in vitro.
