Evaluation of Screening Tests in Medical Diagnosis

Abstract

A simple model is suggested for the purpose of evaluating the performance of screening tests in medical diagnosis. Themodel is used to define some standard measures commonly employed in the evaluation of such tests and then to analyze certain problems concerning efficiency and optimum utilization of multiple tests from each person. Methods for estimating necessary parameters from observed data are outlined and a numerical example is given as an illustration of the model.
