Abstract
The significance of crack stability in fracture toughness testing is discussed and the roles played by testing machine stiffness, testpiece geometry and material rate dependence are described. A compilation of the stability factors for more than twenty testpiece geometries under different loading conditions is given and compared with experimental results. Supplementary experimental methods of promoting crack stability for inherently unstable materials are discussed and illustrated with examples.Keywords
