THE NATURE OF THE GRAM COMPOUND AND ITS BEARING ON THE MECHANISM OF STAINING

Abstract
A study of absorption spectra and boiling point elevations shows that the compound precipitated out when the dye, crystal violet, and iodine combine in aqueous solution, redissociates into free dye and free iodine when the precipitate is dissolved in acetone or alcohol. This indicates that any theory of the mechanism of the Gram reaction based on the presence of a large staining molecule formed between dye and mordant and stable in presence of decolorizer can not be valid, and furnishes confirmation of the authors'' chemical theory of its mechanism.
