Abstract
In whole-mounts of Golgi stained rat retinae four cell types are described in the ganglion cell layer. Three of these cell types are considered to be analogous to the $\alpha $, $\delta $ and $\gamma $ cells described in the cat retina by Boycott & Wassle (1974). The fourth cell type is thought to be a displaced amacrine cell. All the cell types described are present in all parts of the retina. There is no evidence for an increase in dendritic field size with increasing distance from the optic disk.
