Abstract
Samples of glassy carbon prepared from two different resins and given different heat treatments have been studied with small‐angle x‐ray scattering to determine pore structure and concentration. The results of the study are described and discussed after an initial section in which the analytical methods used are defined and developed. The Warren method of measuring absolute intensity was used and checked by obtaining scattering data on known concentrations of type AS Ludox. It was concluded that with heat treatment to 3000°C, the voids in glassy carbon approach a spherical shape nearly uniform in size, about 50 Å in diameter. Also, the total volume concentration of these voids was about one‐third and accounted for the difference of the glassy carbon density from the theoretical value.
