Heat Changes, Respiratory Activities, ATP Pools and Metabolic Potentialities in Natural Sediment Samples Treated with a Quaternary Amine

Abstract
Different test variables were compared for ecotoxicity studies. Changes in heat production, respiratory activity, ATP pool and the most probable number of microorganisms representing characteristic, physiological activities were measured in natural sediment samples, untreated or treated with a quaternary amine, Aliquat 336. Qualitatively good agreement was obtained between heat production and respiratory activity, and between the different types of relative biomass, determined as ATP-pool and most probable number of microorganisms. The test variables seemed to offer a sound approach to ecotoxic problems.
