The Effects of Pituitary Implants and Extracts on the Genital System of the Lizard

Abstract

In 79 [male][male] of Anolis cinensis, both Antuitrin S and whole sheep pituitary injections were identical in producing the following changes in contrast to controls: elevation of tha dorsal crest; erection of the hemipenes; two or threefold enlargement of testes, epididymis and vas deferens; slight enlargement of vas deferens; marked courtship and fighting behavior. In 55 females whole sheep pituitary, homoplastic pituitary implants, and frog pituitaries produced, in contrast to controls, ovulation and egg laying with maximum hypertrophy of the oviducts. Antui- trin S enlarged ovaries and oviducts somewhat.
