Thyroid Uptake of Radioactive Iodine in the Dog; Effect of Diet, Hypophysectomy, and TSH.

Abstract
A scintillation counter adapted to the determination of thyroid I131 uptakes in the unanesthetized dog was described. The dog was shown to have a relatively slow rate of accumulation of Il31 by the thyroid, but a total uptake of the same order of magnitude as man and the rabbit if the dog was maintained on a dietary intake of 70 ug of I or less per day. Hypophysectomy markedly depressed the thyroidal uptake and blood I131 clearance rate, and thyroid stimulating hormone administration elevated the rate of uptake and release.
