Ionic motion in β-PbF2

Abstract
A nuclear magnetic resonance and ionic conductivity study has been made of ionic motion in polycrystalline MnF2‐doped β‐PbF2. Narrowing of the 19F steady‐state resonance line begins near room temperature and above about 400 K the line is fully narrowed. Analysis of the temperature dependence of the NMR linewidth gave an activation enthalpy for F ion motion of 0.59–0.63 eV, the conductivity measurements gave 0.68 eV. These values are in good agreement with reported conduction activation enthalpies for single crystals over the temperature range involved, but are slightly greater than the value previously reported as obtained from conductivity data on pressed pellets.
