Abstract
The effects of the chemical carcinogen 7, 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) on ultraviolet light (UVL) carcinogenesis were investigated. In the study, 15.34 × 107 ergs per cm2 of mid-UVL energy (2800–3200 A) applied over a 29-week period proved carcinogenic. A single application of DMBA 6 weeks before the initiation of the UVL exposures resulted in a significant acceleration of tumor appearance and growth. The findings simulate those described for carcinogenic summation rather than tumor promotion. However, with our present knowledge, an equation between the mechanisms of UVL and chemical carcinogenesis must be considered cautiously.
