Effects of Sulfanilamide onBrucella melitensis, var. melitensis, abortus, andsuis

Abstract

The effect of sulfanilamide and related compounds on Brucella melitensis, Br. abortus, and Br. suis was studied in vitro, with and without anti-Brucella serum. Sulfanilamide had a definite bacteriostatic effect on all spp. of Brucella. Only one of the related compounds was more effective than sulfanilamide. Immune serum alone had little bacteriostatic effect and in combination with sulfanilamide was less effective than sulfanilamide alone. 40 guinea pigs were infected with Br. melitensis, and all had agglu-tinins in their blood serum 15 days later. 20 of the guinea pigs were treated with sulfanilamide. At necropsy, 35 days later, Brucella was isolated from one of the treated animals and from 19 of the 20 controls.
