Abstract
A method for rearing the corn earworm (Heliothis zea (Boddie)) is described and the importance of a cloth surface for images to cling to after emergence and during wing expansion is emphasized. It is apparent that the main difficulties in rearing the corn earworm involve its unpredictable mating habits in the laboratory. In order to meet the requirement for an average incidence of mating in this species the following factors should be considered: (1) A fresh supply of 10% honey solution should be kept in the cage. (2) Light intensity should be 1 foot-candle or below and a villous oviposition surface furnished. (3) The cage temperature should be kept below 80., preferably somewhere between 73° to 80°F. (4) Humidity should be high, 90% or above. (5) The larval food should be kept as fresh as possible.
