Abstract
The study of abundant material of the genus Porphyra from the Uruguayan coast showed us that none of the 3 spp. of Porphyra previously mentioned in the literature (P. kunthiana, P. kunthii and P. minor) could be recognized and that the present species are: P. leucosticta Thuret, P. pujalsii and P. rizzinii ; the last 2 are proposed here as new species. All are monoecious; P. pujalsii presents marginal teeth, being the second species with that character to be described in the American Atlantic Ocean; P. rizzinii differs from P. leucosticta mainly in the disposition of the carpospores and spermatia among other differences. The paper presents a thorough discussion of the new taxa proposed and numerous illustrations of the distinctive features. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
