Smear Methods for the Study of Chromosomes in Ascomycetes

Abstract

Several modifications of the aceto-carmine smear technic used by the author in studies of the meiotic chromosomes of Neurospora are outlined. The critical role of the staining soln. is stressed and suggestions are given for preparing a satisfactory carmine soln. The ease and rapidity of this method suggests its use in cytologic work on other Ascomycetes.
