Abstract
Anthropologists are hampered by the psychological assumption that action occurs in answer to a list of needs. Other culture patterns are not easily interpreted in terms of our lists of needs, nor does their ultimate goal seem to be physical survival. The writer believes that value is the basic motivation, and that adjustive needs are incompatible with the notion of value. Value is inherent in a total situation. Culture expresses the basic values of a society, but needs are merely a product of cultural training. 21 references. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
