Abstract

The hyperfine structure of the

8 {}^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}

state of

{}^{87}{Rb}

and the

9 {}^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}

state of

{}^{133}{Cs}

has been measured by a multistep excitation method using a dye laser. Our measured values for the magnetic dipole coupling constant are

A ({}^{87}{Rb}, 8 {}^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}) = 32.12 (11)

MHz and

A ({}^{133}{Cs}, 9 {}^{2}P_{\frac{1}{2}}) = 23.19 (15)

MHz.
