In the opinion of Vogt the etiology of glassworker''s cataract is due to a high absorption of short wave infrared by the lens. The absorption by the lens in the rabbit, calf and man of wavelengths from 700-1400 mu was measured and was found to be less than that for the same thickness of water for the shorter (700-900 m[mu]) wavelengths.
