Mathematical Theory of Electrochemical Machining 1. Anodic Smoothing

Abstract
Electrochemical machining, the recently-developed process for metal forming, has evoked theoretical interest in the solution of the potential equation with moving boundary conditions. A model is proposed which describes smoothing of surface irregularities on a plane anode; the dependence of machining times on factors such as shape and spacing of the irregularities is obtained. Electrode overpotential effects are introduced into the model, and are shown to increase both machining times and the depth of cut required to achieve a desired degree of smoothness.
