Baryon and lepton numbers as broken local symmetries

Abstract

We investigate what kind of linear combination of baryon ($B$) and lepton ($L$) numbers ($B-\alpha L$) ($\alpha$ is a numerical constant) can be a generator of a grand unified group $G$, and consequently a broken local symmetry.
