Abstract

Despite a number of early case reports indicating emergence or worsening of suicidal thinking or behavior after initiation of desipramine hydrochloride¹ and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors,^2-8 several meta-analyses of antidepressant medication trials in major depressive disorder (MDD) found no significant difference in risk relative to placebo.^9-12 Indeed, an examination of health-plan data found a decrease in suicide risk after initiation of treatment with antidepressants.¹³
