Stability of Plane Magnetohydrodynamic Shocks

Abstract
The stability of plane magnetohydrodynamic shocks in a perfectly conducting fluid with general equation of state is studied. General (three‐dimensional) perturbations are considered. A condition for stability is derived for the special cases of perpendicular and parallel fast shocks. Stability is thereby proved in these cases for a polytropic gas with γ < 3.
