Motivations Toward Health Examinations

Abstract
Younger and middle-aged veterans, lower income groups and non-whites cooperate willingly. Beliefs and attitudes, more than personal characteristics, were related to examinations. It is recommended that: the offer to take the health examination be made to the person directly; noncooperators be identified by screening questions and visited by a special interviewer but not approached on the subject by initial visitor; graphic and explanatory material about the examination be given the respondent; endorsement from local doctors be obtained; examination procedures meet local preferences; and follow-up be made on failures to keep appointments.
