Izziella abbottae is described as a new genus and species for an advanced gelatinous member of the family Helminthocladiaceae collected in Hawaii over a period of years but only at one site to which two species in other genera appear to be restricted. It is distinguished among other genera and species in the family by the ball of sterile filaments radiating from the infra-supporting cell proximal to and quite independent of the developing gonimoblast.
