Compact pulse transformers for high energy laser pulsers

Abstract
Step-up pulse transformers designed for self-sustained CO/sub 2/ discharge laser pulser applications are described. A unique autotransformer winding arrangement having low inductance, fast rise time characteristics is reported. Test results are presented for a 1.6-kJ, 130-kV pulse transformer pulser driving a 2.25-liter high pressure discharge. Stable 10 /spl mu/s pulse discharges were demonstrated for laser gas pressures up to 2.1 atm and at specific energy loadings up to 315 J/liter in single-shot tests. Spark gap circuits were employed for voltage pulse sharpening to improve discharge stability.
