Quantitative Ecological Studies from Landmannahellir, Iceland: II. The Rhizome Behaviour of Carex Bigelowii and Calamagrostis Neglecta

Abstract

The detailed distribution of rhizomes and tillers is recorded in small sample plots which demonstrate a very marked clumping of tillers from different rhizome systems. This active orientation of rhizome growth and tiller production is discussed in relation to nutritional gradient and chemical attraction theories. The results are also discussed in relation to cyclic phases and vegetational pattern.
