HISTOCHEMISTRY OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE: I. THE USE OF ENZYMES AS SPECIFIC HISTOCHEMICAL REAGENTS

Abstract
This paper presents evidence that the abolition of the staining of a polysaccharide complex in tissue sections can be produced by means other than that of specific hydrolysis, namely, (1) by removal through the action of specific depolymerases, (2) by destruction of proteins to which the stainable material is attached, and (3) by the masking of the stainable groups by the attachment of substances originally present in the enzyme prepn. Consequently one must employ great caution when using and interpreting results based on staining reactions involving enzyme prepns. as histochemical reagents.Keywords
