Papillary Adenofibroma of the Uterus: A Benign Mesodermal Mixed Tumor of Müllerian Origin

Abstract
Six papillary adenofibromas of the uterus considered to be the benign mixed tumors of müllerian origin are described. Two arose in the cervix and four in the endometrium. The patients, in the fifth and sixth decades of life, complained of vaginal bleeding or discharge. The tumors were composed of papillary projections, clefts, and cysts into which papillae projected. The epithelial component of the tumors was stratified squamous, and mucinous and nonmucinous columnar types. The stroma was composed of small fibroblasts, the appearance resembling that of adenofibroma of the ovary and breast. In one instance, an adenocarcinoma was present in one area of the polyp. Follow-up data in five cases reveal no evidence of persistent or recurrent disease following hysterectomy.
