Abstract
The paper reviews the interaction of plasmas with materials and presents a status summary based on experience in large fusion experiments, laboratory investigations and design studies. The phenomena that are discussed limit the power densities and confinement properties attainable in plasmas; their control is an essential element of the design of future fusion devices. Keywords
