Fecal Streptococci. II. Quantification of Streptococci in Feces

Abstract
This study investigates the types of streptococci found in the feces of humans and animals, and classifies them in broad groups by a minimum number of selected biochemical reactions. The study was performed using a new streptococcal medium designated KF streptococcus medium, which may be used as a more productive method for the isolation of fecal streptococci. The investigation showed that there are other streptococci in feces, in addition to the enterococcus group, which have importance as indicators of fecal contamination in polluted waters or in tracing sources of pollution. A table giving the estimated per capita discharge of fecal streptococci and enterococci from human, fowl, and domestic quadripeds is presented.
