Abstract
A fatal toxic encephalitis occurred after 6 months of isonicotinic acid hydrazine (iproniazid) therapy in a 4.5 mg/kg dosage. Post mortem was limited to the brain. Since there were no other obvious causes of toxicity or death, the probability that death was due to iproniazid given in average therapeutic dosage must be entertained. A possible explanation of iproniazid toxicity is its presumed interference with the formation of co-enzyme 1 by replacing nicotinamide.
