Abstract
Newly discovered contemporary accounts, and old reports long overlooked, are here cited and coördinated with published reports and observations concerning the shock of January 9, 1857; and the extent and intensity of the earthquake are discussed. It is concluded that no other shock so great and so strong has occurred in the Coast Range region of south-central and southern California since the coming of white men. Keywords
