Study of theE(1420)region at 10 GeV/c

Abstract

We have measured the cross section for the inclusive reaction ${\pi }^{+}d\to K_S^0{K}^{\pm }{\pi }^{\mp }+X$ at 10 GeV/c using the large-aperture solenoid spectrometer at SLAC. We measure the product of the cross section and branching ratio, $\sigma ({\pi }^{+}d\to E+X)B(E\to K_S^0{K}^{\pm }{\pi }^{\mp })$, to be 1.7±0.4 μb. We find that the $K_S^0{K}^{\pm }{\pi }^{\mp }$ decay of the $E$ meson appears to be dominated by the $K^{*}\overline{K}$ decay mode, and the data are consistent with the spin-parity assignment of $J^P=1^{+}$ for the $E$ meson.
